Funding for Surgical Procedures
Necessary eye surgeries are generally covered by private medical insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid. New Mexicans that do not have any insurance can take advantage of the following sources to fund needed eye surgeries.
* Emergency Eye Care Program: This program is sponsored by the Commission for the Blind and is administered by Dr. Mark Schluter, University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. It pays for eye surgery necessary to prevent permanent vision loss. Cataract removal is not covered.
UNM Hospital uses Emergency Eye Care Program funds for New Mexicans outside Bernalillo County and a separate fund to cover residents of Bernalillo County. Call the UNM Hospital Division of Ophthalmology in Albuquerque at 505-272-6120. http://hsc.unm.edu/som/surgery/OPHTH
